Dua for Seeking Knowledge

Dua for Seeking Knowledge

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to ask Allah for knowledge that is useful, beneficial, and brings us closer to Him.

Why Ask for Knowledge?

Allah commands us in the Qur’an to ask Him for knowledge, showing that ‘ilm—especially knowledge of the Qur’an—is essential. Qur’anic knowledge purifies the heart, strengthens faith, guides our actions, and helps us live a meaningful and righteous life.

When to Recite These Duas:

  • Before studying or beginning any learning

  • Before reading the Qur’an or Islamic books

  • Before attending a class, lecture, or course

  • Anytime you want Allah to bless your knowledge and make it beneficial

Dua #1

Translation:
My Lord, open my heart, make my task easy, and remove the knot from my tongue so they understand my words.

O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, teach me what will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge.

(Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah 251 — Sahih)

Dua #6

Translation:
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, a heart that does not fear You, a soul that is never satisfied, and a prayer that is not answered.

(Reference: Sahih Muslim 2722)

Background:
The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua to protect oneself from harmful states and unbeneficial knowledge.

Personal Duas of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (RA) Related to the Qur’an

Translation:
O Allah! Whatever my tongue recites from Your Book, grant me the ability to reflect and ponder over it. O Allah, grant me understanding of it, knowledge of its meanings, the ability to witness its wonders, and the ability to act upon it for as long as I live. Indeed, You have power over all things.

This supplication appears in later scholarly works as a personal dua attributed to Umar (RA). It is not a hadith but a righteous, comprehensive dua that is permissible to recite.

Dua for Light and Guidance from the Qur’an

O Allah, make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief, and the one that takes away my worries. (
